Residential Fires Across North Carolina Highlight Need for Structural and Engineering Assessments

12/26/2025

Raleigh, N.C. — SSN Corporation, through its engineering team, has been actively involved in supporting homeowners in the Raleigh area by providing post-fire structural assessments that help determine the true extent of fire-related damage and whether a home can be safely repaired or requires rebuilding. As residential fires continue to affect communities across North Carolina, the role of professional engineers has become increasingly critical in guiding recovery efforts and protecting long-term public safety.

Recent residential fires across the state, ranging from small, contained incidents to complete structural losses, have highlighted the growing need for expert evaluation after fire events. Fire departments across North Carolina continue to respond to a high volume of calls, with Raleigh alone recording more than 1,200 fire incidents in 2025 to date City of Raleigh. Beyond emergency response, these incidents reveal a broader pattern of human and economic impact.

Data from the U.S. Fire Administration show that North Carolina’s casualty rates in residential structure fires exceed national averages, which was 6.1 deaths and 24.6 injuries per 1,000 residential fires in 2023 FEMA. Also, state fire fatality reports documented 123 fire-related deaths in 2024 across more than half of the state’s counties NCOSFM. In addition to loss of life and injury, residential fires often result in severe property damage, forcing homeowners to navigate costly reconstruction and insurance claims. Local and national incidents alike demonstrate how quickly a seemingly minor ignition source can escalate into catastrophic structural loss.

Within this context, SSN Engineers has been working directly with homeowners in the Raleigh area to assess fire-damaged residences and provide clear, engineering-based guidance on next steps. The damage encountered during these evaluations varies widely. In some cases, fires result in localized charring of roof framing or isolated damage to load-bearing elements. In others, intense heat combined with water from firefighting efforts compromises major structural components, including floor systems, walls, and foundations. Importantly, much of this damage is not immediately visible. Structural members may appear intact while having suffered significant strength loss due to heat exposure or prolonged moisture saturation. Professional engineering assessments are therefore essential before repairs begin or occupants return, ensuring that hidden deficiencies do not place lives or property at risk.

SSN’s evaluations focus on the overall structural integrity of the building, including load-bearing beams, columns, and roof and floor systems, as well as the combined effects of fire, heat, smoke, and water. By identifying concealed deterioration and assessing whether materials can safely perform their intended function, engineers provide homeowners with reliable information needed to make informed decisions about repair, reinforcement, or reconstruction. Beyond post-fire assessments, SSN Engineers also plays a broader role in mitigation and rebuilding efforts. Engineering input during reconstruction allows homeowners to incorporate fire-resistant materials, improved structural detailing, and design strategies that reduce vulnerability to future fire events while ensuring compliance with updated building and fire safety codes. When applied early, engineering-led mitigation can significantly improve resilience and reduce the likelihood of similar losses in the future.

As residential development continues to expand throughout Raleigh and across North Carolina, the need for qualified engineering involvement following fire incidents is expected to grow. Even fires considered minor can produce hidden structural damage, and proceeding with repairs without professional evaluation can leave serious safety issues unaddressed. Fire statistics and recent tragedies underscore that emergency response alone is not enough; prevention, mitigation, and thorough post-event engineering evaluation are equally vital components of community safety. SSN Corporation’s role in this process centers on protecting homeowners and communities by delivering objective, technically sound assessments and guiding safe recovery after fire events.
